Where the VANROCK mulcher works

Five applications where powerful shredding pays off.

Shred residual branches, dead wood and pruned branches to reduce accumulation and convert them into organic mulch.

Know-how

Forestry mulcher know-how

How an excavator mulcher works

A forestry mulcher spins a toothed rotor at high speed, shredding standing vegetation, brush and trees into mulch in a single pass. On an excavator, the mulcher goes to the work — up slopes, over ditches and into stands a ground machine can't enter.

  • Rotor and teeth define the character: fixed carbide teeth grind and tolerate soil and stone contact; swinging hammer/knife rotors cut faster in clean wood.
  • Flow is production: mulching heads are the hungriest hydraulic attachments — sustained auxiliary flow keeps rotor speed up in the cut.
  • The excavator advantage: reach lets you process material from one setup position, selectively removing stems while leaving keep-trees untouched.
  • The mulch layer left behind suppresses regrowth, protects soil from erosion and eliminates haul-off entirely.

Choosing the right mulcher

Size the head to the carrier's hydraulics first — the rotor you can keep spinning matters more than the widest head on the brochure.

  • Hydraulic reality check: match the head's flow demand to your machine's actual sustained auxiliary output, not its peak rating.
  • Working width vs stem size: a narrower head with high tip speed processes large stems better than a wide head running slow.
  • Tooth type: carbide fixed teeth for rocky ground and soil contact; knives for clean plantations where finish and speed matter.
  • Carrier stability: mulching at full reach with a running rotor tests the machine's stability — check the head's weight against reach charts.
  • Guarding and protection: specify carrier guarding (cab, hoses, belly) for forestry duty — it's part of the system, not an accessory.

Where excavator mulchers earn their keep

One machine clears, processes and leaves the site finished — no chainsaw crews, no burn piles, no chipping and trucking.

  • Right-of-way maintenance: powerlines, pipelines, roads and rail corridors kept clear on a maintenance cycle.
  • Land clearing: converting scrub and forest regrowth into ready-to-work ground in one pass.
  • Fire-break and fuel-load reduction: mechanized vegetation management on slopes too steep or remote for ground rigs.
  • Invasive species control: selective removal with immediate on-site processing of the cut material.

FAQ

Mulcher FAQ

The deciding number is sustained auxiliary hydraulic flow — mulchers convert flow into rotor speed, and rotor speed is production. Check your machine's continuous (not peak) flow and pressure against the head's requirement, then confirm the head's weight is comfortable at your typical working reach. VANROCK dealers match head to machine model before quoting, including the guarding package forestry work demands.
