Know-how

Flail mower know-how

How an excavator flail mower works

A flail mower spins a horizontal rotor fitted with swinging blades (flails) that cut and shred grass, weeds and light brush. Mounted on an excavator or backhoe boom, it mows where wheeled mowers cannot: slopes, ditches, banks and behind barriers.

  • Swinging flails forgive impact: hitting a hidden post or stone deflects the blade instead of destroying the rotor — the core advantage over rigid blades in verge work.
  • Y-blades for grass and light growth; hammer flails for heavier brush and saplings — the rotor is the same, the tooling chooses the duty.
  • Boom reach turns one machine into a slope mower, ditch cleaner and hedge trimmer from the safe side of the barrier.
  • Cut material is shredded fine and left as mulch — no windrows, no collection pass.

Choosing the right flail mower

Choose by the vegetation, then confirm the hydraulics and the reach geometry.

  • Vegetation class: seasonal grass wants Y-blades and width; neglected growth and saplings want hammer flails and torque.
  • Hydraulic match: sustained flow keeps rotor speed in heavy growth — check continuous auxiliary output against the mower's demand.
  • Width vs control: narrower heads follow ditch profiles and obstacles better; wide heads win on open verges.
  • Weight at reach: verify head weight against the boom's lift chart at your typical mowing radius, especially on compact carriers.
  • Wear parts: flails and belts are consumables — standardized, quickly changeable tooling keeps seasonal contracts profitable.

Where flail mowers earn their keep

Every roadside authority and landscape contractor knows the geometry problem: growth is exactly where mowers can't drive.

  • Roadside verges and embankments: mow slopes from the carriageway with the carrier on stable ground.
  • Watercourse and ditch maintenance: clean banks and channels without machines entering the water.
  • Fence lines and barriers: cut behind guardrails and under fences from one side.
  • Solar parks and infrastructure: vegetation control between and under installations without ground pressure damage.

FAQ

Flail Mower FAQ

Any excavator or backhoe with auxiliary hydraulics can run a flail head sized to it. Two checks decide the match: sustained hydraulic flow against the mower's demand (rotor speed is cut quality), and head weight against the boom's lift capacity at your real mowing reach — a mower that's comfortable at 3 m may be marginal at full stretch. VANROCK dealers confirm both against your machine model.
