How deep can post hole diggers go?
Expert Answer
A post hole digger or auger can usually reach about 3 to 4 feet with a standard setup, and deeper holes are possible with the right machine, bit length, and extensions. For excavator-mounted auger drives, the practical depth is often limited more by torque, soil conditions, and hole stability than by the attachment alone.
Depth depends on the job:
- Fence and mailbox posts are commonly 18 to 36 inches deep, depending on post length, soil, and frost line requirements.
- Deck footings, sign posts, and structural work often need deeper holes, sometimes 42 inches or more.
- Some projects need 6 feet or more, but that usually calls for a hydraulic auger with extensions and careful planning.
What reduces digging depth:
- Hard clay, gravel, rock, roots, or wet sticky soil.
- A bit that is too short for the target depth.
- Insufficient torque or flow for the auger drive.
- Loose spoil packing back into the hole as you drill deeper.
Signs you are pushing the setup too far:
- The auger slows sharply or stalls.
- The machine starts rocking or losing stability.
- Cuttings stop clearing and the hole binds up.
- The auger becomes difficult to lift out cleanly.
Practical guidance:
- Match the auger drive to your excavator, loader, or skid steer size and hydraulic output.
- Use the shortest bit that still meets your depth requirement, then add extensions only if needed.
- Check local code and frost-depth requirements before choosing hole depth.
- For deeper or larger-diameter holes, an excavator-mounted auger is usually a better choice than a handheld digger.
