What soils can be stabilized in place, and do I need cement or lime?

Many fine-grained and mixed soils can be improved in place, including clays, silts, sandy silts, and some granular soils with fines. Binder choice depends on the ground behavior and the engineering objective. Lime is commonly used to reduce plasticity, improve workability, and dry wet clayey soils. Cement is commonly used when the goal is higher early strength, stiffness, and bearing capacity. Blended binders are also used where both modification and strength gain are needed. Suitability depends on gradation, plasticity, sulfate condition, moisture content, and especially organic content, because high organics can reduce binder effectiveness.
