Many operators run hammers for the first clearance pass, then Y-blades for maintenance cycles.

Can a flail mower cut small trees and brush?

With hammer flails, yes — light brush and saplings are within a flail mower's duty. Beyond that, forcing a mower into heavy woody growth burns belts and bearings; the correct tool is a forestry mulcher, purpose-built with a heavier rotor and carbide teeth. The honest boundary: if you'd call it 'mowing', flail it; if you'd call it 'clearing', mulch it.

How do I mow slopes and ditches safely with an excavator?

That geometry is exactly why boom-mounted flails exist: the carrier stays on firm, level ground while the head works the slope or channel. Keep the rotor parallel to the surface, work within the machine's stability envelope at reach, and use the boom's float or a light-touch technique to follow terrain. Compared to driving a mower along an embankment, the excavator approach removes the rollover risk entirely.

How an excavator flail mower works

A flail mower spins a horizontal rotor fitted with swinging blades (flails) that cut and shred grass, weeds and light brush. Mounted on an excavator or backhoe boom, it mows where wheeled mowers cannot: slopes, ditches, banks and behind barriers.

Swinging flails forgive impact: hitting a hidden post or stone deflects the blade instead of destroying the rotor — the core advantage over rigid blades in verge work.
Y-blades for grass and light growth; hammer flails for heavier brush and saplings — the rotor is the same, the tooling chooses the duty.
Boom reach turns one machine into a slope mower, ditch cleaner and hedge trimmer from the safe side of the barrier.
Cut material is shredded fine and left as mulch — no windrows, no collection pass.
