// Q&A · Track Tension & Alignment

What is a track adjuster and how does it work?

Expert_Answer

A track adjuster is the component that controls track tension on crawler machines like excavators, dozers, and loaders. It usually consists of a recoil spring, grease cylinder, piston, and front idler connection. By pumping grease into the cylinder, the piston moves forward and pushes the idler out, tightening the track. When the track hits an obstacle, the recoil spring and grease system allow limited rearward movement to absorb shock and protect the undercarriage. Proper tension is important: too loose can cause derailment and uneven wear, while too tight increases wear on pins, bushings, rollers, and sprockets. If you need replacement undercarriage parts, VANROCK supplies track chains, rollers, idlers, sprockets, and shoes.
