How do I replace a sprocket on an excavator?

Expert_Answer

Sprocket replacement is straightforward with the right access: release track tension via the grease valve, split or slacken the track chain enough to clear the sprocket, then unbolt the sprocket rim from the final drive hub — bolts are usually high-tensile and torqued, so use a breaker bar or impact gun and expect corrosion. Clean the hub mating face, fit the new sprocket, and torque bolts in a cross pattern to the manufacturer specification, ideally with new bolts and thread-lock. Refit and re-tension the track. Important: a new sprocket on a badly worn chain wears out quickly, because the worn pitch no longer matches the new teeth — sprockets and chains are best changed together or at matched wear stages.
