// Q&A · Track Chains

What is the difference between sealed and lubricated (SALT) and dry track chains?

Expert_Answer

Sealed and lubricated track chains (often called SALT) have oil or grease sealed inside the joint between the pin and bushing. That internal lubricant reduces metal-to-metal contact, lowers wear, and usually gives longer service life, especially in abrasive or high-load applications. Dry track chains do not have internal lubrication in the joint, so they are simpler and can work well in lighter-duty, lower-speed, or cleaner conditions, but they typically wear faster in demanding ground engagement.

In short: SALT chains are built for longer life and lower maintenance, while dry chains are a simpler, more economical option for less severe use. The right choice depends on machine size, duty cycle, terrain, and maintenance practices. VANROCK supplies both types and can quote the correct chain.
