Why does reverse travel wear the undercarriage more?

Reverse travel can increase undercarriage wear because the load path and contact pattern are less favorable than in forward travel. On many machines, the track chain, bushings, sprockets, and rollers see different engagement angles in reverse, which can raise friction and impact loading. Reverse operation also often happens during tight maneuvers, grading, or frequent direction changes, so the undercarriage experiences more slip, scrubbing, and shock. In abrasive ground conditions, that can accelerate bushing and sprocket wear, plus uneven shoe and roller wear. The effect depends on machine design, operator habits, and site conditions, but minimizing high-speed reversing and keeping track tension correct will help.
