What are the different types of excavators?

Expert Answer

Excavators are usually grouped by size and undercarriage type. Mini excavators (under ~6 t) and midi excavators (6–10 t) run on rubber tracks and dominate landscaping and utilities. Standard crawler excavators (10–45 t) run on steel track chains and shoes and do most construction and earthmoving work. Large mining excavators go from 45 t to several hundred tonnes. Beyond size there are wheeled excavators for road-based work, long-reach machines for demolition and dredging, zero-tail-swing models for tight sites, and specialised variants such as amphibious and walking excavators. The undercarriage differs with each class — rubber tracks on compact machines, heavier chains, rollers and shoes as tonnage grows. VANROCK supplies undercarriage parts across all these classes, covering 5,300+ machine models from 54 brands, with pricing quoted on request through its dealer network.
