// Q&A · Track Chains

Why is my new track chain wearing out so fast?

Expert Answer

A new track chain usually wears out fast because the root cause is elsewhere in the undercarriage or machine setup. Common causes include incorrect track tension, misaligned rollers or idlers, worn sprockets, bad seal failure causing contamination, or running in abrasive mud, rock, or demolition material. A chain can also wear quickly if the carrier or lower rollers are seized, the sprocket tooth profile is poor, or the machine is operating with excessive load, high speed, or frequent turns. Check chain pitch, rail wear, sprocket wear, and tension first. If the rest of the system is not corrected, a replacement chain will not last.
